Now one lucky reader and their guest can feel like royalty with a special stay at the Monkey Island Estate, a refuge of Georgian elegance in the middle of the Thames.
Surrounded by manicured lawns are two elegant buildings that were commissioned by the 3rd Duke of Marlborough, who used the island as his private fishing retreat. The estate houses 40 luxurious rooms with beautiful views of the estate and the river, as well as the magnificent Wedgewood Suite, its walls inspired by jasperware sculpted into mermaids, seashells and mythical creatures.
Our winner and their guest will enjoy dinner in the Brasserie, Monkey Island’s elegant restaurant. French doors lead out onto a picturesque terrace right on the Thames, providing an idyllic view of passing boats.
The estate is thought to have taken its unusual name from the 17th-century fresco that adorns the ceiling of the ‘Monkey Room’. Another possibility is that the island’s name derives from ‘Monks Eyot’ – Old English for island – after the Augustinian monks that settled here in the 12th century. The Floating Spa, a customised barge, takes its cue from the early monks with its Monks’ Elixir massage.
Beyond the estate, the village of Bray is just a short walk away, and the Berkshire countryside within easy reach. As the perfect finale to a day at Monkey Island, take a walk along the moonlit Thames – there’s no better way to end a stay at this magical hotel.
