Early opening for some of Britain’s beautiful buildings

A lot of our favourite places to visit close their doors during the quieter winter months, using the time to clean and carry out vital restoration work, before welcoming visitors again in the spring. But in recent years, more of our much-loved historic homes open their doors during the winter months.

For example, at Polesden Lacey in Surrey, home of the well-known Edwardian hostess Mrs Richard Greville, there are Sneak Peek Tours on weekends in January and February.

“Mrs Greville’s house was made to receive guests and she was famed for her hospitality,” says Victoria Nutt, House and Collections Manager. “She threw wonderful festive parties for her staff and for close friends and we hope to give visitors a feel for it all”.

New this winter, for the first time during the winter months weekend visitors will have a regular opportunity to tour the house with one of the knowledgeable Tour Guides. These tours provide a wonderful behind the scenes ‘sneak peek’ for visitors.
Ideal for anyone with a particular interest in the house and its collection and for those who missed out on the house during the warmer months or just want to have a sneaky peek at what goes on at Polesden Lacey after the winter shutters go up.

Vicky Nutt, House and Collections Manager at Polesden Lacey said “We get lots of visitors asking to see what happens in the House over the winter, which is a really busy time for us. With the support of our volunteers we are excited to be able to offer visitors a tour inside the house every weekend in November, January and February.”

Each tour is being led by one of our knowledgeable volunteers who want to share some of the secrets of Polesden Lacey with our visitors.

Visitors just need to turn up at Polesden on the day and book onto a tour.

In addition to these tours the house will also be open to visitors for three weekends in the lead up to Christmas for our Mrs Greville’s Christmas events, which are a lovely way for all the family to get into the festive spirit. â
