A Royal Night Out charts the moment Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret mingled with crowds in London on VE Day
A new film starring Rupert Everett and Emily Watson will show the moment the future Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Margaret joined crowds in the streets of London during VE Day.
Everett and Watson will star as King George and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother), with Canadian actress Sarah Gadon and rising British star Bel Powley playing the royal princesses in the film, which was partly filmed on location in the 2017 UK City of Culture, Hull.
Released on 15 May, the fictionalised A Royal Night Out is based on real events when the young princesses were granted permission to mingle with the British people incognito following the end of the Second World War. The film, directed by Julian Jarrold, will be released shortly after the 70th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May.
The city of Hull was chosen as a location because of its architecture and history with various city centre locations used during the filming last year including The Guildhall and Princes Dock Street. Filming also took place in Alfred Gelder Street, which was made to resemble London’s Piccadilly; and at Hull City Hall, which ‘doubles’ as The Ritz.
