No. 1 Royal Crescent is a magnificently restored townhouse museum where you can explore fashionable life in 18th-century Georgian Bath.
No. 1 Royal Crescent is a museum which has been decorated and furnished just as it might have been during the period 1776-1796. The rooms feature historic furniture, pictures and objects that reveal what life was like for Bath’s fashionable residents – both upstairs and downstairs. Our new immersive experience brings the house to life through film and sound so that visitors can get a very real sense of what it would have been like to live there.
‘The Georgians at Home’ experience runs daily when the museum is open and provides an opportunity to meet a family who are in Bath for the season. As you move through the rooms of the house you will eavesdrop on their day, finding out how they lived in the Georgian city, the issues and challenges of the day, as well as details about the historic city of Bath. You will also meet the servants and understand the different lives they led.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Georgian townhouse in Bath must have a Jane Austen story to tell. The new Jane Austen tour runs on the last Friday of every month and looks at life in Britain in the 1790s – 1820, (the Regency into Late-Georgian period), including when Austen was writing, and for a time living in Bath. Using the rooms of the house as inspiration, passages and conversations from Austen’s novels bring to life the activities that took place in such domestic spaces, as well as questioning the thoughts and feelings of the people who inhabited them.
‘A Georgian Christmas’ sees the rooms dressed for the festival season. Enjoy the traditions and celebrations of a Georgian Christmas told through stories and poems throughout the house as part of this special, seasonal immersive experience that runs throughout December.
The museum is open Tuesday – Sunday, until 31 December, 10am – 5.30pm, with last entry at 4.30pm. We recommend you pre-book but walk in tickets are also available, subject to capacity.
The museum’s new experiences are immersive with film projection and sound. A museum App is available for free, downloadable onto your phone or accessible by borrowing one of the museum’s devices. The App enables you to explore more about each room and its collections.
Families with children can make the most of our App for kids, as well as a new children’s trail and during holiday periods, special craft activities and workshops.
The ‘Georgians at Home’ experience features stories relating to the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the source of much of the wealth in Georgian Bath. This content is told within the context of the 18th century narrative rather than from our contemporary viewpoint today, so some people visiting the museum may find this upsetting. Staff will support anyone wanting to pause their visit.
