Diamond Jubilee 2012 events announced

Here at BRITAIN we’re very excited about Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, when the UK will be celebrating 60 years of Elizabeth II’s reign with pageants, concerts and street parties taking place over an extended weekend in June 2012

The initial plans have just been announced by Buckingham Palace. The late-May Bank Holiday will be moved to the start of June and combined with one more day for the Jubilee, giving a four-day weekend that will be full of festivities, both in London and beyond.

Diamond Jubilee Events

The Queen will begin her weekend by attending the horseracing at the Epsom Derby on Saturday 2 June. On Sunday, there will be a pageant of some 1,000 boats assembled from around the world, which will process down the Thames through London. The Queen will travel in the Royal Barge at the head of the flotilla.

There will also be a Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday 3 June, an initiative set up by the Eden Project to encourage people to get out into the streets and parks of Britain to enjoy street parties and picnics with their neighbours.

On Monday 4 June the big event will be a Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, organized by the BBC, with musicians (yet to be confirmed) from across Britain and the Commonwealth. Tickets will be made available to UK residents by a public ballot – and of course it will be televised as well.

A network of 2,012 Jubilee Beacons will be lit across the UK and the Commonwealth, with The Queen herself lighting the National Beacon, as she did at her Golden Jubilee in 2002.

And finally, on Tuesday 5 June, there will be a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, and The Queen will process by carriage through London.

This is just the beginning of the plans for Britain’s Diamond Jubilee events – and the very beginning of our coverage. We’ll be keeping you up to date with all the latest news and events as they are announced on our Diamond Jubilee page.
