The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their son George Alexander Louis.
Despite the modern approach to parenting that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have already displayed – with no evidence of a nanny and William changing the first nappy – the pair revealed themselves to be traditionalists when it came to naming their baby boy. There have been six King Georges in the United Kingdom, the last being George VI, William’s great-grandfather.
George was the bookmakers’ favorite moniker for the young prince, who was born on Monday afternoon at St Mary’s Hospital in London. He will be known as Prince George of Cambridge.
The announcement follows The Queen’s visit to Kensington Palace today where she met her third grandchild for the first time. It is thought that Catherine and William will have discussed their choice with her. It is unusual, by royal standards, to name a baby so quickly. After all, the country had to wait a month before Prince Charles was named in 1948 and a week for Prince William’s name to be revealed in 1982.
The Duke and Duchess and Prince George are now relaxing at Catherine’s parents’ home in the village of Bucklebury in Berkshire.
