Illuminations bring Muncaster Castle and Gardens to life for their spectacular evening openings. Head to the Western Lake District to enjoy this historic property in the winter months and festive season.
DON’T MISS the chance to see Muncaster Castle and Gardens at night – the Western Lake District’s award-winning attraction is running themed evenings, keeping gates open to 9pm until the end of December. Darkest Muncaster evenings see the historic castle, home of the Pennington family since 1208, transformed by lights, music, sound and special effects. Hundreds of lights illuminate the trees and shrubs and shows are projected across the front of the castle. The cafe is also staying open until 8pm.
The castle, near Ravenglass in Cumbria, is also home to the World Owl Centre, with daily bird shows, as well as the gardens, described by John Ruskin as the ‘gateway to paradise’.
You can also see it dressed up for Christmas: from Sunday 22 November to the end of December, the castle will be open 1-3pm to show off its festive decorations, and Victorian Christmas Tours of the castle – lit by candlelight and with log fires – run through December.
Afterwards enjoy a glass of His Lordship’s Mulled Wine and a mince pie in the castle’s historic dining room.
