A spectacular image of Start Bay in Devon with ewes grazing in a snow-covered foreground has beaten hundreds of entrants to scoop the South West Coast Path’s annual photographic competition.
The winning image by Devon photographer Nick Shepherd, which will appear on the front of the South West Coast Path’s 2014 calendar, was chosen by award-winning photographer Adam Burton. Adam says: “This was an absolute standout favourite for me by a country mile. It has everything: a great view, beautiful subject matter and conditions, strong composition and wonderful rich light.”
Nick Shepherd, who lives locally and walks the Coast Path with his wife and border collie Beth, says: “I particularly wanted to capture the dramatic sweep of the bay with Start Point lighthouse in the distance, and the sheep and snow offered me the perfect foreground. I have been taking photos for 37 years, and particularly like photographing the power of dramatic winter seas…”
Gareth Dickson, Operations Manager at Cornish Cottage Holidays, sponsors of the photographic competition, adds: “We have been overwhelmed by the fantastic quality of entries into this competition. Congratulations to Nick, a deserving winner. We do hope he enjoys his prize, a holiday with Cornish Cottage Holidays, and that he continues to enjoy the South West Coast Path which we are so proud to support.”
The calendar will go on sale this summer and will be available from the South West Coast Path Association’s website and other regional retail outlets. A proportion of the sale price from each calendar goes towards Coast Path improvements.
Cornish Cottage Holidays, Cicerone Press, Francis Lincoln publishers and the South West Coast Path Association all donated prizes.
