The Queen’s visit to Manchester

The sun was shining down on the crowds as Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Manchester on Friday 23rd March 2012.

Flags peppered the horizon, as hundreds descended to see Her Majesty continue the Diamond Jubilee Tour of Britain.

Her time in the area was brief but her presence made an impression that will last a lifetime, having opened new hospitals in the city.

The Queen’s busy schedule involved opening Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital and a new wing at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The Queen and Duke met staff and patients and listened to a specially commissioned musical work by the Royal Northern College of Music during their visit to the hospital trust.

Her Majesty also paid a visit to Manchester‘s new media hub in Salford, MediaCityUK. Interestingly, Queen Victoria opened the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, on the banks of which MediaCityUK now stands, and the exact spot where they were standing used to be Dock 9, opened by King Edward VII in 1905.

The Queen will continue her tour on Thursday 29th March 2012, when she visits Redbridge, Walthomstow and Harrow.
