drakes of Brighton, Marina Parade

Make like a superstar and check into Brighton’s most chic and spoiling hotel

Big cheeses like Kylie, and Woody Allen are said to rest their heads at drakes when they’re in town and it’s easy to see why. A period townhouse boasting twenty guestrooms on the seafront with a picture postcard vista – this is what people come to Brighton for.

drakes has a modern interior: if you are after cabinets of curiosities or knickknacks, you might almost think it lacks character with its pine furniture, block colour and minimalism. However, there’s a gigantic freestanding bath in the bay window that overlooks Brighton pier, which is ridiculously chic and luxurious. You won’t be able to get enough of the people watching – and the smug feeling that passers by are jealous of your view through the big sash windows. However the joy of having such view has a downside. The road is busy, even at night, so pack your earplugs.

The bed is big enough for six, there are gorgeous White Company products and room service is quick and friendly. After having a swim in the bath, head down to the restaurant. It’s in the basement, which might seem a bit of shame when there’s an iconic sea view outside, however once the food comes out you won’t care.

The asparagus, egg and Iberian cured ham for starter was absolutely incredible: just the right amount of each element and cooked faultlessly. The lamb for main course was deliciously tender and complimented with peppers and fondant potatoes.

They care deeply about their wine – the waiter told us he had personally been to New Zealand to taste wine – and this sort of passion for food is really encouraging.

The puddings are sophisticated – raspberry soufflé, for example. However, for those unable to curb their enthusiasm opt for the chocolate trio – which included the most heavenly white chocolate mousse.

The restaurant filled up quickly, and by 9pm every table but one was filled – not bad for a Sunday night. You’d be hard pushed to find a hotel more representative of what Brighton is all about, comfort and luxury in relaxed, quirky and friendly surroundings.
