London Quiz

How well do you know London? Well enough to tackle our fiendishly difficult quiz compiled by Chris Fautley, author of the London special

There’s a prize for the first five all-correct answers (or the next best). You’ll find some of the solutions in Chris’s feature; others in his newly published book Discovering London’s Docklands; while for others you’ll have to dig a little deeper.

WIN: Each of our five prize winners will receive a copy of Discovering London’s Docklands, by Chris Fautley (Shire Books, £6.99; $US13.95. ISBN 978-0-74780-845-9). This illustrated book reveals Docklands’s mysteries and secrets such as the launch site of the Great Eastern; where pink pigeons were a common sight; where to find a piece of Britain’s first iron-clad frigate; and how Mudchute got its name.

It also explores oddities of the 21st century – among them a floating church; a blue flying saucer; and a roof garden at ground level. And, of course, the eye-popping architecture for which the district has become famous, making the book an invaluable guide for both the armchair traveller and those wishing to visit this remarkable area for themselves.Chris is a writer with a passion for the quirkiness of Britain’s heritage and history – and London in particular, where he shares Samuel Johnson’s observation: that when a man is tired of London, he is indeed tired of life.
