Located just a few miles outside the city of York, Middlethorpe Hall & Spa is a William and Mary red brick country house built in 1699 that has been carefully brought back to life in elegant fashion.

With the Grand Depart of the Tour de France 2014 setting off from Leeds on 5 July, taking in much of North Yorkshire, and the second leg setting off from York on 6 July weaving its way through West Yorkshire, the world spotlight will well and truly be on Britain’s largest county this year.

Where better then to soak up the excitement of this prestigious event than at a grand country home, where from the moment you pull up to the entrance to unload your luggage it feels as though you’ve come to visit your rich aristocratic cousin for the weekend?

Built of mellow red brick with limestone dressings, the 29-bedroom hotel sits within 20 acres of land and inside is furnished with antiques and fine paintings. The hotel’s fine-dining restaurant serves up such refined modern British dishes as diver-caught Scottish scallops, and poached loin of mountain hare. Guests can also make full use of the spa facilities, housed in two neighbouring Edwardian properties opposite the main house, and the city of York with its Gothic minster is just a short drive away.
