BRITAIN - December/January 2010 Issue

Print Send a summary of this page to someone via email.

Our destination feature this issue looks at Shakespeare Country, which boasts Shakespeare's birthplace and theatrical connections – the Royal Shakespeare Company's theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon is fully reopening after a much vaunted redevelopment – historic cities, charming villages, stately homes and gardens, museums and galleries, quirky attractions and stylish accommodation.

If a bit of 'city culture' with a royal twist is on your shopping list, head for the Windsor area. We explore this royal borough on the River Thames west of London, from castles to cafes and in between.

In the second part of our Britain's Timeline series, we look at the Normans, who brought massive change to Britain following the most famous date in British history, 1066.

We head to north-west Wales to explore the magical fantasy village of Portmeirion, forever remembered as the location of the 1960s cult television series, The Prisoner, starring Patrick McGoohan. Portmeirion was created by architect Clough Williams-Ellis and inspiration for his eldest daughter Susan's pottery.

To get you in a festive mood with the holiday season fast approaching, we take a look back at Christmas and New Year traditions that have formed the celebrations we enjoy today.

Just to prove that there's plenty to do and to visit in outside the peak holiday season in Britain, we check out some of the historic houses and castles that are open during the winter months, and some that are dressing up for a real festive celebration!

With the launch of Cunard's latest liner, the new Queen Elizabeth, we get in the mood for the return of the glory days of travel, and look at some of Britain's other famous ships to visit.

In our Places to Stay series this issue, with the Savoy Hotel in London due to reopening after what turned out to be a long refurbishment, we look at London's 'grande dame' hotels and most historic accommodations.

Don't miss our latest BritList – our insider's guide to “What to do, where to go and what to buy” for this season.
