Day boat trips along Britain’s canals

As Ratty from ŒWind in the Willows famously said: “There is nothing half as much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” And nothing says English summertime more than a relaxing day out on the water, gliding along Britain’s most scenic canals, from Stratford-upon-Avon in Shakespeare’s England, to rural Oxford, the beautiful Brecon Beacons and more. You can hire boats for the day from Drifters Waterways Holidays, at 12 of its bases, with full tuition to those new to canal boating, until you get the hang of steering, mooring up and working the locks, so you can enjoy a lazy day out with pub stop or two at your own pace.

Classic cars at Audley End

Grand Jacobean mansion Audley End will be hosting a Father’s Day, with a charming collection of classic cars on display in its grounds. The vast house that can be seen today is only about a third the size of the mansion created in about 1605–14 by Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, but still boasts much of its original character. With this as a backdrop, you can browse the elegant and impressive motors and enjoy an interesting and enjoyable day out for all ages.

Medieval Day at Kenilworth Castle

For a slightly more unusual, and certainly historical, Father’s Day, head to Kenilworth Castle for a day of juggling, jesters, stilt-walking and medieval-themed entertainment in a spectacular setting.

Day at Beeston Castle

There’s nothing more perfect for family bonding on Father’s Day than a good old kite-flying and den-building session. This year, visitors are invited to Beeston Castle and Woodland Park to make their very own kite and fly it high above the castle’s ruins. There’ll also be time to cross the bridge and climb to the top of the castle, before exploring the grounds and using all the abundant natural materials to make a mighty den.
