It’s almost that time of year again, when the ground of Royal Hospital Chelsea in London are deluged in a sea of floral and fauna as the world’s best garden designers and enthusiasts descend for the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show.

This year’s show runs from 24 to 28 May and is set to host something slightly different; a stunning ‘sea of red’ made of 300,000 crochet poppies will be taking pride of place in the grounds of its venue, the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

The 21,500 square feet of handmade flowers will sit alongside 25,000 real stemmed poppies to remember those who lost their lives in conflicts, and show visitors will be able to admire his work from the showground.

The poppies have been beautifully handmade as a tribute to those who served in all wars, creating a thread of connection to servicemen and women in the armed forces. Each of the hand-knitted and crocheted flowers was individually crafted by people from a range of cultures, and communities and ages, from two to 102 years old.

The installation, similar to the poppy installation at the Tower of London, was originally made as part of the 5,000 Poppies Project in Australia to mark Remembrance Day back in 2013.

Now 300,000 poppies coming to London as part of a project by landscape designer Phillip Johnson, who won Best Show Garden in 2013. The Chelsea tribute will honour all of the Commonwealth servicemen and women who have fought across all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations over the last 100 years.

The 5,000 Poppies project behind the idea began as a small tribute by Australian founders Lynne Berry and Margaret Knight to honour their fathers who fought in the Second World War, before blossoming into a national outpouring of respect and remembrance.

Johnson’s ambitious design will be the first time that the RHS Chelsea Flower Show has connected into the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in such a dramatic way.
