Action at the Veuve Cliquot Gold Cup

THE GLORIOUS SETTING of Cowdray Park against the backdrop of the South Downs is one of the most beautiful places in the world to be introduced to polo, that most popular of British sporting occasions.

This year's polo season runs to 19 September and highlights include: (22 May) the England v South Africa International Test Match for the St Regis Polo Cup and the British Ladies Open Championship Final; (6 June) The Argentine Ambassadors Cup High Goal Polo; (20 June) The Midhurst Town Cup High Goal Polo; and  (9-15 August) The Final of the Cowdray Park Challenge Cup.

And where better to sample polo than at the Final of the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup, the trophy that every leading player wants to win sometime in their career? This year's tournament opens on 22 June and some 40 matches take place, leading to the Quarter Finals on 10/11 July, the Semis on 15 July, then the Final on Sunday 18 July.

The winners raise the Veuve Cliquot Gold Cup
The tournament for the fabulous Gold Cup, at the polo club within Lord Cowdray's 17,000 acre estate at Midhurst, West Sussex, decides the winners of the British Open Polo Championship, so this is polo at the very highest level attracting the world’s finest players. The Final on 18 July is considered one of the most stylish and chic country events in the sporting calendar and with world class players in action, celebrities in abundance, and a stunning location, this is a day in the Veuve Clicquot ‘Season’ not to be missed.

Don’t worry if you’ve never watched a chukka or two of polo, as Cowdray’s witty and informed commentators will soon guide you through all the thrills and spills. And at half time there’s your chance to tread in the divots and spot who’s–who in the style stakes.

Polo at Cowdray Park

Cowdray Park is the ideal location to picnic, but there are also plenty of food outlets and bars in the shopping village where up to 90 trade stands offer a tempting array of clothing, accessories, shoes, leather goods, items for the home and garden and country goodies. There’s even a mini funfair – what more could you ask of a summer day out?
