Near the Motorways

IF YOU ARE looking for somewhere new to take a break on a long motorway journey as a change from service stations and chain diners, keep this guide in your car. It features over 200 pubs, inns, hostelries and places of interest, some just five minutes away from a motorway junction. Hugh Cantlie publishes the guide through his own company Cheviot Books and visits every pub and restaurant featured.

An area I know well is the Devon end of the M5 motorway and I'm glad to see the Jack in the Green pub (below), near Exeter Airport, featured. It's in the village of Rockbeare on the 'old' Exeter to Honiton road (before the A30 bypass, one used to drive right by the pub on the drive between London and Exeter) and won the Restaurant of the Year in the Taste of the West Awards. This popularity means that it's best to book (tel: (01404) 822240; www.jackinthegreen.uk.com.
