The Trine Chair by John Makepeace
THE FIRST MAJOR retrospective of the fascinating furniture designer-maker John Makepeace is touring Britain from September this year. Makepeace has pioneered new methods in the craft, using sustainable materials to create exotic and original pieces. His work is innovative and exclusive, regularly commanding the highest prices on offer for contemporary furniture. He founded the Parnham Trust and the School for Craftsmen in Wood at Parnham House in Dorset, which later became known as Parnham College. One of his early students was Viscount Linley, who has gone on to head up his own design company.

The Devon Guild touring exhibition, John Makepeace: Enriching the Language of Furniture, enables you not only to see some fabulous examples of his work, but also to hear John himself talk about his techniques and influences. It starts at the home of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, in the converted mill at Bovey Tracey on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, from 18 September to 29 October, then travels around the country through to November 2011.
