Godinton House and Gardens

THE TRADITION OF an employee being presented with a clock on his retirement or to show long service has been turned on its head at Godinton House, in Kent. This summer, friends, family and colleagues got together to celebrate Tony Russell’s birthday and 50 years of service on the Godinton Estate but Tony turned the tables on his employers and presented them with a clock, which over the past two years he has painstakingly built from scratch. The beautiful 'Act of Parliament' or Tavern clock has been given pride of place in the Billiard Room having been officially handed over to Michael Jennings, Chairman of the Trustees (pictured, left, with Tony), 50 years after Tony's first day of work on the estate.

“I left the Grenadier Guards after National Service and followed my gather and grandfather into the building trade," says Tony. "On my first day of work I was told to go to somewhere called Godinton House and to do some repointing and I’ve been here ever since! Funnily enough, I finished a repointing job in the walled garden only last week. Godinton and especially Mr “Alan” (Wyndam Green) have been very good to me and, as my hobby is clock making, I am delighted this piece of work will be on show."

The clock is designed with distinctive Godinton Gables, has the cap badge of the Grenadier Guards and the makers name. In all of Godinton it is the only piece of Tony’s craftsmanship that has his name on.

Tony has no plan to properly retire but has reduced his hours to four days a week to give more time for his hobbies. Another clock is being planned! Visitors to the Godinton Estate, with its beautiful Jacobean house, formal gardens and parkland, can see Tony's clock, as teas are now served in the Billard room.
